Our Mission
Advocating Change
Ubungani suisse is a charity founded in 2016 and based in Switzerland. Our mission is to create positive and lasting change for the children in the townships of South Africa. Our Philosophy
It is not the philosophy of Ubungani suisse to create its own charities or projects in the townships of South Africa. Instead, our goal is to support the projects and charities developed and led by highly motivated South Africans. One example is Rosie Mashie, pictured above. Baphumelele Children’s Home was Rosie's response to an alarming situation. She had no money when she decided to provide a home and place of safety to children who were orphaned, abandoned, abused, and neglected, but she had a vision, a big heart, a lot of resolve, and the constant support of her community.
Our Team
Frank Lochbaum
Frank has traveled to South Africa for more than 25 years. The idea for creating Ubungani suisse came to him as he followed his daughter’s thesis project about AIDS and the contraception policy of the Catholic Church in South Africa. To gain a better understanding of the situation, Frank and his family made multiple trips to South Africa from 2012 to 2017. During these visits, they met with many aid organizations, which had a major impact on Frank. He felt that rather than launch a charity to start new projects in South Africa, there was a stronger need to support the many dedicated, local South Africans in their charity efforts.
Béatrice van Nes
Béatrice travelled to Cape Town for the first time in 2013 via a personal connection. During one week she worked in the Lutheran mission Themba Labantu in the township Philippi. Through this commitment she gained good insights into the valuable work of the local staff and responsible people. To keep this commitment going, the organisations are dependent on financial and personnel support. Béatrice would like to improve the opportunities for the next generations in South Africa with her engagement.
